Gatecrasher Apartments turns the tables for courtyard design

The internal courtyard at the brand new Gatecrasher Apartments in Sheffield is to pay homage to the sites iconic musical heritage.

Developers for the project have unveiled images of the design, which will feature a paved and grass ‘record turntable’ feature, complete with a concrete ‘arm’.

Manchester-based DEP Landscape Architecture was appointed to create the design for the site, which is on the location of the famous former Gatecrasher nightclub at the corner of Arundel Street and Matilda Street.

They saw an opportunity to play on the site’s iconic history, after it was opened as Republic in 1996 before becoming Gatecrasher One in 2003, and have created the unique turntable design to reflect the previous use of the land.

Chris Podmore, director at DEP Landscape Architecture, said: “Having studied in Sheffield, this project was a great opportunity to pay homage to Gatecrasher, which was at its peak when I was at Sheffield University. We wanted to produce a bold scheme that functioned as a space whilst strongly reflecting the history of the site.”

“That’s how we got to the turntable design we have today. We feel we have created something truly unique that makes this development stand out from others. It will be fantastic to see the design come to life.”

Gatecrasher Apartments, which is due to open in September, will be a top quality home for more than 240 students, providing clusters of three, four and five beds, all en-suite.

There will also be 90 one-bed studios each with a kitchen with integrated full-size oven and appliances, breakfast bar, large fitted wardrobe, settee, double bed and 40 inch Smart TV and includes 50GB broadband.

Communal features at the £12 million apartments include a gym, cinema room, games room, mezzanine study area and a lounge. The complex will also have shops and offices at ground level, a ‘green’ environmentally-friendly roof and be part of the Community Heat and Power scheme that is linked to the Bernard Road incinerator.

Gatecrasher Apartments will be part of the West One accommodation portfolio that already embraces student flats in the award-winning Sellers Wheel, Huttons Buildings and Broomgrove Apartments, as well as the West One residential, leisure and commercial development in Fitzwilliam Street.

Andrea Marsden, marketing and residential manager at West One Accommodation, said: “We are over the moon with the turntable design. Gatecrasher nightclub was so iconic to the city of Sheffield so it seems fitting to honour it in this way. Students will be able to use it as a communal space to socialise, whilst visually it adds something really special to the complex.”

Work is expected to be completed on the Gatecrasher Apartments development by August 2016.
