Student residential accreditation for converted former nightclub

One of Sheffield’s newest student accommodation complexes has gained major industry recognition just four months after its first tenants moved in.

Niche Buildings, which opened its doors to tenants in September 2018, has been recognized by the Accreditation Network UK (ANUK) National Code of Standards for larger student developments 2019 following a successful start to its first academic year since opening.

Niche, built on the site of the former nightclub on Sidney Street in Sheffield’s cultural industries quarter, was joined in gaining the accreditation by another recent development – Speedwell Apartments, also on Sidney Street.

Both Niche Buildings and Speedwell Apartments, managed by renowned student lettings agency West One, are part of the £11m Alsop Fields development by City Estates.

They join West One’s other outlets – Broomgrove Apartments in Broomhill, Porterbrook Apartments in Broomhall and Newton House (Glasgow), Sellers Wheel, Gatecrasher Apartments and Huttons Buildings in the city centre – in gaining the accreditation, making it six consecutive years in which West One has obtained the industry accolade.

The ANUK accreditation was gained following an in-depth audit of not just the buildings, but of the management of the tenants which included ensuring staff are trained to a high level to cope with a business disaster and even a city-wide evacuation plan.

Andrea Marsden, head of residential at City Estates, which operates West One Student Accommodation, said: “We’re extremely proud to see Gatecrasher, Niche Buildings and Speedwell Works added to the ANUK’s list of accredited major student residential outlets, after Sellers Wheel and Broomgrove Apartments first gained the accolade six years ago.

“It’s particularly pleasing considering the stringent and extensive process which was involved in gaining the accreditation. This accreditation is a huge asset for us as a business and reinforces our ethos of providing the best accommodation and the best service.”

The ANUK is a non-profit organization which is linked to universities in the UK, which includes two elements – one for university halls of residence and the other for non-educational large developments.
