Top Tips For Move-In Week

To make moving in as seamless as possible and get you settled into your new home, we have collated our top tips to help with the big move.

With the beginning of university just a month away, the thought of packing and moving may be starting to loom over you. It can be easy to let the start of this new chapter of life overwhelm you, but it is important to remember what an exciting time this is.

To make moving in as seamless as possible and get you settled into your new home, we have collated our top tips to help with the big move.

Try not to overpack

It can be tempting when first moving away from home to take everything you own with you, but we promise you won’t need it all. If you’re struggling to know what to take, a great way to narrow down your luggage is to track over the next month everything you actually wear and use. Taking less stuff can make the overall moving process run much smoother and give you more time to socialise rather than unpack.

Bring distinctive items for communal areas

If you’re living in a space with a shared kitchen, bathroom or living room, it can be easy to lose track of your stuff and get it mixed in with your flatmates’ belongings.

The best way to keep an eye on your things is to make sure anything living in the communal spaces is distinct to you. Whether this is bright-coloured cutlery, personalised mugs or a funky towel, it’s time to get creative.

Connect with your flatmates before you go

An easy way to calm the anxieties of moving in with strangers is to try and get to know them before you meet them. Facebook groups for your specific accommodation are a popular way to try and connect with your future flatmates and are often set up by the universities. Talking to your flatmates online can help break the ice and allow you to find some things in common before your move-in date.

Make your space your own

Moving into a new space can feel isolating and it is perfectly normal to get a little homesick in your first few weeks. A great way to ease yourself into it is to bring a few home comforts with you for a little piece of familiarity. Photos of friends and family and decorations from your bedroom are just one way to make your room your own and can help you settle into your new home.

Hopefully with this advice, moving in will become an exciting first part of your university journey.
