Top tips for moving out of your student home

As the time comes to leave your current home, the thought of packing up and saying goodbye can feel overwhelming.

Whether you are moving into a new student home or finishing your time at university, moving out can be as emotional as it is exciting, but, with a little planning and a positive mindset, you can make this transition much smoother.

To help guide you through the process, we have gathered some top tips from our team to ensure your move-out week is a stress-free and seamless experience.

Start preparing as early as possible

When it comes to moving out, the earlier you start, the smoother it will go. It might feel like you have plenty of time, but packing can sneak up on you. It is important to begin sorting through your belongings ahead of time, as well as checking your lease for any specific requirements from your landlord or letting agency. Getting ahead of the game will help you feel organised and in control.

Check for damage

Before you say goodbye to your space, check for any damage or wear and tear as early as possible. This can be an important step to ensure that you leave your home in the best possible condition and help ensure you receive your full deposit back. If you can, make repairs to things like little scuffs on the wall or loose cupboards (without causing further damage) and for the bigger issues, make sure to let your landlord know ahead of time as this can make a big difference in leaving a positive final impression.

Make sure to do a deep clean

A deep clean is an essential part of your move-out process. It’s your final gift to the space that holds your memories, and it shows respect for the next person who will call it home. Start by clearing out all your personal belongings, and then give your home a fresh start by cleaning common areas like the kitchen and bathroom. Make sure to communicate with your flatmates when the best time to do this is, so that everyone does their fair share.

Communicate With Your Landlord

Before you leave, reach out to your landlord or letting agency to confirm move-out details. Schedule a final inspection, discuss the return of your keys, and check that any outstanding rent or bills are settled. Keeping the lines of communication open will help smooth the transition and mean that there are no last-minute surprises.

With these tips in hand, you're ready to tackle your move-out week with confidence and ease. May the next chapter of your journey be filled with new memories, fresh starts, and exciting opportunities.
