Our top tips for moving into your university accommodation

September is just around the corner, which means it is nearly time to move into your new university accommodation.

Whether you’re new to university or just moving to a new space, this can seem a really daunting experience, but to make your move-in as seamless as possible, we have collated our top tips to help with the big move.

Try to stick to bringing essentials

It can be really easy to feel you need to bring your whole world with you, and while it is still important to bring some personal belongings to make your space feel like home, you don’t need to bring everything.

The best way to cut down is to buy communal items like washing up liquid, bin bags and pans once you get there, as it could be that you find a flatmate you can share the cost with. For your clothes, think about only taking items you’ve worn in the past month, because if you haven’t worn them recently, you probably don’t need them.

Organise your stuff into categories

There is nothing worse than arriving at your new home, meeting your new housemates and then not being able to find any of your things as they are in random boxes. When you are packing, make sure to sort boxes in categories that make sense to you and label them so all your things are easily accessible.

This will make unpacking so much quicker, meaning you can spend more time enjoying your first few days making new friends and seeing new places, rather than sorting out your room.

Bring distinctive items for communal areas

When moving into a shared accommodation, one of the most common issues people have is their items going missing in communal spaces. Unfortunately, this is just part of the process, and more times than not, you might lose a fork or two.

The best way to avoid this is to bring distinctive items that won’t be mistaken for someone else's. Whether it is bright pink cutlery, plates with your name on or patterned towels, anything that makes your stuff stand out is a sure way to keep hold of it.

Plan ahead of your move-in day

One of the most important things you can do is to think about your move-in day with plenty of time. It can be really stressful, but the earlier you begin organising how it will work, the easier it will become.

Your first steps should be to make a list of everything you need to bring with you, and then decide what you need to buy. Once you have all your stuff in order, all that is left to do is plan your journey to your new home and enjoy the process.
